Your relationships with those around you are very important to you in your life. But when hearing loss begins to affect your communication with them it starts to cause strain on the relationship, and if not fixed, could dissolve the relationship. So how can hearing aids help with your relationship with others?

When you think about communication there are two parts that make it work. There is the listening side of the communication and there is the verbal side of communication. If one side is not working properly them communication breaks down. This is what happens when a person with hearing loss communicates. The one part of their communication is not functioning properly therefore communication breaks down. But hearing aids can help with this. When a person with hearing loss employs the use of hearing aids the listening part of their side of communication begins to function again and communication is restored. It is important to remember hearing aids do not “restore” hearing that was lost, but works with the ability you have left. Adjustments may need to be made to the amplification in different environments in order to make the sound around the person with hearing aids optimal.

When hearing aids are employed by a person with hearing loss they are better able to hear others they are communicating with. They are better able to hear what the other person or persons are saying thus making it easier for the person with hearing loss to verbally communicate back. The person with hearing loss is less embarrassed because they are now able to hear the conversation, thus encouraging them to be more engaged in the conversation and communication with others. The person with hearing loss also reduces their need to ask others to repeat themselves, which improves the flow of communication and in turn, the relationship.

Hearing aids make the exchange of conversation and communication easier for those with hearing loss as well as for those without hearing loss. Communication is easier and more enjoyable for all due to the reduction of repetition as well as the reduction of voice volume by the speaker without hearing loss. With increased enjoyable communication relationships are able to thrive better thus improving the quality of the relationship as well as the quality of the person with hearing loss’ life.
